Beginner Tips for Becoming a Keynote Speaker

Keynote speakers give the keynote address at the start of the program.  In a way, they set the expectations of the entire event.  How the keynote speakers deliver the keynote speech will affect how the entire program will run.  If the keynote speaker fails to captivate the audience, there would be a big chance that they’ll find the entire event boring.  With that said, keynote speakers have a very big responsibility in their hands.  If you are considering a career as a keynote speaker, here are a few tips you can follow to ensure your success in your chosen career.

The first thing you need to do is write your keynote speech.  While some motivational speakers are more comfortable with impromptu keynote speeches, beginners may need to rely on their keynote speech to avoid blacking out when faced with a large audience.  But before you write your keynote speech, it is important that you know who you will be addressing it to.  Remember this cliché when you’re writing a keynote address, “Different folks, different strokes”.  There’s no way you can address a crowd of teenagers in the same way as you would address business executives.  You need to tailor-fit your speech in accordance to your audience.

Beginning your keynote address with a thought-provoking quote or story can capture the attention of your audience.  This will make them easily receptive to the message you want to convey.  However, be careful when inserting personal anecdotes to your keynote speech.  You might stray from the main point you want to express to your audience.  Keep your keynote address interesting but maintain its focus to the key points you want to put across.  But of course, the speech is only a part of the equation.  How you deliver your speech is another important aspect.  As a keynote speaker, it is important that you exude an aura of confidence, enthusiasm and geniality.  Your tone and body language is what makes your keynote speech effective and motivational.  Always maintain a good posture and smile on your face while delivering your keynote speech.

To complete the package, you must dress up in a professional manner.  Remember that the crowd will judge you first by the way you look.  If you do not exude the aura of success, chances are, they won’t respect you.  Sure, you may be one of the most effective speakers of all time, but why compromise your speaking prowess by dressing up poorly?  Unless the host specifies otherwise, you must arrive in clean and crisp business suit, clean leather shoes and a neat hairstyle.  Only wear a few pieces of jewelry, like a pair earrings and a brooch or a wristwatch.  As the cliché goes, “Dress for success.”
